Writers are

SUPERSTARS

Let me tell you how writers define culture

My speaking is based around the
concept that WRITERS ARE SUPERSTARS.

I dive deep into the intersection of literature and popular culture to present keynotes or lead panel discussions about what it takes to make a living as a writer, how the emotional elements of writing contributes to the craft, and the historical and present-day challenges and opportunities writers and authors are faced with.

My speaking style is vulnerable and conversational.

I don’t hold back. I have experienced nearly all sides of the publishing industry and unleash those experiences for the sake of my audience.

I am not just an author, I study the industry and have a level of expertise that is uncommon of most writers.

Because I’ve experienced so much in my career as a writer, I often use my own life as an example.

From selling thousands of books independently, building a community of emerging writers, establishing a freelance career, landing book deals with the biggest publishers in the world, to now running my own creative business, I’m able to speak from a place of honesty and understanding.

Add to the mix that I was a teen father and high school dropout who ultimately graduated from university and built a successful writing career, these conversations get really interesting.

“During your presentation I learned a lot, as well as the other students, about the writing and the publishing industry. As well as its nuances and how much work really goes into writing a book and putting it out there in the world. We really enjoyed the authenticity of your presentation and the way you incorporated personal experiences and lessons within your presentation. It really made it more impactful and engaging.”

Workshops

WORKSHOPS FOR MIDDLE SCHOOL / HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

For Middle/High School students, the Writers Are Superstars workshop will be an interactive experience that exposes students to multiple forms of writing - TV, video games, books, copywriting - through different activities. By the end of the workshop, students will be aware of how they can earn a living as a writer, how they can enjoy writing as a hobby, and which stream of writing they are most interested in.

WORKSHOPS FOR COLLEGES / UNIVERSITIES

Once post secondary students complete the workshop, they will better understand the business of writing and publishing, including what it takes to make a living as a full-time writer.

Students will also understand the process of publishing a book (self-publishing or traditional publishing), creative ways to market their books, and be made aware of how to earn an income from other opportunities outside of being an author. They will also learn how to form community around their content and start building a readership, regardless of which stream of writing they choose.

Kern's teaching of the writing process and the character's 'why' was very interesting to learn about.  Overall, a wonderful experience.
